The process of taking the PE or SE Exam can be quite stressful, but the moment of triumph after passing is undeniably exhilarating. The euphoria of knowing you won’t have to endure another round of exams or relentless studying is truly magical. However, putting emotions aside, it’s crucial for you to complete five essential tasks right after passing the exam to successfully conclude your licensing journey.
1. Ask for a raise
For some companies, this is a given. After passing my PE exam, I noticed a pleasant surprise on my paystub – my employer granted me an automatic $50 increase in each paycheck. I also got a higher-than-usual raise after my annual performance review that same year. If your employer didn’t give you any additional compensation for passing the exam, take the initiative and advocate for a raise. Keep in mind that as a licensed engineer, you have become a more valuable asset to the company and will shoulder additional responsibilities, making it reasonable to seek higher compensation. If requesting a raise immediately feels uncomfortable, consider making it a focal point during your annual performance review. Remember, your raise should surpass the standard annual increment to reflect your newfound qualifications and contributions.
2. Get reimbursed for your expenses
Check with your company to see if they will pay some or all of your costs for the exam and licensing. Taking the PE or SE exam can be financially burdensome due to the various costs involved. However, it’s important to remember that you shouldn’t have to bear these expenses alone. In my case, the company I worked for generously covered the test fee, review books, review classes, and annual licensing renewal. They were keen on encouraging employees to obtain their licenses as it is a crucial aspect of the job. If you encounter difficulties persuading your company to cover the costs, consider maintaining detailed records as you might be able to claim the expense as a tax deduction. To maximize the write-off, it’s advisable to seek guidance from a tax advisor who can provide more insights into the process.
3. Make it known that you passed the exam
Obtaining your license is a significant professional accomplishment and you should take pride in it. No, you don’t need to go brag to everyone how great you are for passing the exam. However, you do need to let everyone in your professional sphere know of your new stature. Once you receive your license certificate, consider displaying it prominently in your workspace at your workplace (indeed, this is likely the most suitable place for it). Moreover, ensure that your professional identity reflects your achievement. Update your business cards to include the P.E. or S.E. designation and incorporate the same in your email signature. Don’t forget to update your LinkedIn profile to showcase your newly acquired licensure as well. Embracing and highlighting your achievement in these professional avenues can enhance your credibility and recognition in your professional circle.
4. Thank the people that supported you
While achieving this milestone is undoubtedly your accomplishment, it’s essential to acknowledge the support you received along the way. Take a moment to express your gratitude by writing thank-you cards to those who lent you books or offered valuable advice during your preparation. Show appreciation to your spouse or partner by treating them to a nice meal, acknowledging their patience and the additional efforts they put in while you were studying. Remember to extend your gratitude to any instructors who provided assistance with challenging topics. Demonstrating thankfulness towards these individuals will not only bring positivity to your life but also uplift their spirits, making them feel valued and appreciated.
5. Celebrate!
Congratulations on this remarkable achievement! Treating yourself to a well-deserved reward after conquering this challenging exam is essential. It doesn’t have to be extravagant; the significance lies in acknowledging your hard work and dedication. We often forget to celebrate these pivotal moments in life, so taking the time to do something special for yourself is a must. Is there something you’ve been longing for, like that purse you’ve always wanted or a new set of golf clubs? By appreciating and rewarding yourself, you’ll experience a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction for your accomplishments. Remember, celebrating our successes is vital for maintaining our well-being and motivation. So, don’t hesitate to treat yourself to a thoughtful gift—you’ve earned it!
